Introduction to an Almost Real Adult

This summer I had to learn how to be a real adult. For the past 11 years I have either attended Kanakuk Kamps over the summer, or, in the case of the past two, worked there. This summer all of the “adulting” that I had put off finally caught up with me. Luckily, I still got to start out the summer with something enjoyable.

Rothenburg, Germany

Study Abroad (aka the victory lap for my graduated friends):
I began my summer of adulting by going on a study abroad trip to Germany, Switzerland, and Austria with a combination of PLC and Society of Fellows alums. The trip lasted ten days and for the most part was the last time I got to see some of my really close friends from the past three years. About three-fourths of my friends graduated last year so this trip served as a stark realization that we were all going our separate ways. The trip was incredible and I got to experience so much history and culture with the same people with whom I struggled through Latin and Literature classes.

The LSAT (aka the worst day ever):
After returning from my study abroad trip I had two weeks before taking the Law School Admissions test, more commonly known as the LSAT. Let me tell you something about the LSAT… It is pure evil. The Law School Admissions Council is probably just Satan sitting in a basement taking great joy in the misery he inflicts on 20,000 law school hopefuls every three(ish) months. I studied extremely hard for three months in preparation for the test. While the studying paid off and I did well on the test, you could not pay me enough money to sit through the five-hour exam and then wait three and a half weeks for my score ever again.

Wisdom Teeth Removal (aka the time I had a poor reaction to Hydrocodone):
I decided to schedule my wisdom teeth removal surgery for exactly one week after I took the LSAT. My decision was based around the idea that surely the pain medicine from the surgery would keep me calm enough that I would not even think about the fact that I did not know my score yet. Unfortunately hydrocodone, the post-surgery medicine my doctor selected, had the opposite effect. Not only did it not effectively dull the pain from the surgery, it also actually intensified my anxiety level. Needless to say, my wisdom teeth removal process was not the most pleasant part of my summer.

Grownup Jobs (aka my realization that I need to become a morning person):
For the last month of my summer I decided that I needed to do two things: gain experience in the law field and make money. Luckily I was able to get a part-time unpaid internship with a district judge and a paid part-time job with a local bank. I spent three weeks diagraming and labeling the bank’s safety deposit vaults. While it was a pretty tedious job, I actually  enjoyed having something to do that did not require much brainpower. It was a stark contrast to preparing for the LSAT. I also had a lot of fun interning for the district judge. I got to experience what the behind the scenes of a courtroom was like and I saw some very interesting people.

Overall my summer was a whirlwind of preparing for the next few years of my life. As much as I missed my summer camp counselor days I am glad I stepped foot into the real world for a brief moment.

  1. What a great Study Abroad trip, Elizabeth: wow! I can share condolences about the LSAT (I am no fan of testing of any kind, as you might have guessed from this class)... and I can also share condolences about wisdom teeth: I had mine out this summer too. Which is weird I know for someone over 50, but my dentist said it was really the right thing to do. So I did it. I was so lucky, though: my oral surgeon doesn't believe in pains meds, so instead he has you max out on ibuprofen the day before the surgery and then this intense ibuprofen regimen afterwards... I was skeptical, but it worked! Reading about your experience, I feel even more lucky, because it was actually not such a big deal. Not fun, for sure... but not the disaster I expected! Anyway, I hope you will have a GREAT (and pain-free! and LSAT-free!) semester ahead. :-)

  2. Hi Elizabeth!

I am so jealous that you studied abroad. I always wanted to do that, but unfortunately never got to, as this will be my last semester! But maybe I can be like your friends and do it as an alum! I totally understand your desire to want to become a morning person. It is actually something I have actually been working on as well!

  3. Hi Elizabeth!

You certainly had a busy summer. I think it's great that you were able to travel and study abroad. It's always been something that I've been curious about, but I'm not sure it has ever been feasible for me.

I have also had my wisdom teeth pulled, although my experience wasn't quite as bad as yours. I believe I had mine pulled the day after Michael Jackson died. When my mom and I went to get my prescription filled after my surgery, I managed to talk her into getting his greatest hits CD (I was still a bit woozy at the time, but I have to think I would have wanted that CD either way) before going home and sleeping for two days straight.

Congratulations on passing the LSAT and good luck on the rest if the semester!

  4. Hi Elizabeth :) old roomie here. What are the odds randomizer picked you for me to comment on... was it forced? Maybe... But the World will never know!

I'm so glad you had fun on your trip to Germany and Austria! You'll have to tell me all about the trip and show me picture next time I see you (which will hopefully be soon).

I literally bragged about you and your pre LSAT test score thing (hopefully you know what I'm referring to, because I'm struggling )that you took last spring, multiple times this summer. I'm not quite sure how it even came up in a conversation at camp, but I knew you were going to kill your test this summer.

    Miss you so much baggs!

  5. Hello Elizabeth! Im sure you had a wonderful time in Germany. I always wanted to go because many of my friends have been. I have only been to France and that happened a few months ago. I absolutely loved it there. Experiencing a new culture is a pretty cool thing. On the flip side, I too had a bad reaction to Hydrocodone when my wisdom teeth was pulled and it was the worst! Congrats on doing well on the LSAT! Hard work always pay off !

  6. Hi, Elizabeth! That is a very jam packed summer, but it sounds like it was a very fun one with traveling to Germany and getting real job experience! I'm so sorry to hear about your bad reaction to hydrocodone after your wisdom teeth removal. I had mine out this past December, the day after my 21st birthday (not the best choice), but it wasn't near as bad of an experience as yours was. I also took a graduate test, the GRE, and I would never ever choose to endure that again!!! So I definitely feel that pain! I'm glad to hear you did well on the LSAT and good luck on your law school applications!

  7. Hey Elizabeth! So your blog caught my eye since my middle name is Elizabeth. I think its super awesome that you got to go travel over the summer! It's always sad when you and your friends go separate ways but I'm glad you guys got to travel together. I have a friend who is in OU Law and she has described the LSAT in similar terms as you did haha.

  8. Elizabeth!
Wow! It sounds like you had a very busy summer. The first thing that caught my eye was the LSAT. I will be taking the test next June, so I am already starting to get stressed about it. If you have any tips, please let me know! On the other hand,I loved learning about your study abroad trip to Germany! I have always considered studying abroad, and it sounds like your experience was a lot of fun. I look forward to seeing your blog and reading you stories. I hope you have a great rest of your semester!

  9. Hi Elizabeth,
It's great meeting you. I really liked the title of your introduction of being an almost real adult because I think that can apply to everybody in this class! That study abroad trip sounds like a blast. I'm very jealous. Germany will always be on my bucket list of places to travel to. Also, it is very impressive that you took the LSAT, great job! It was great getting to know you and I hope you have a great rest of the semester. Good luck!

  10. Hi Elizabeth! It looks like you definitely had an eventful summer. I can relate with having to start adulting already. It's not fun. I'm not exactly a morning person either, but somehow I push through and am usually the first one up to wake others. Unless I don't get enough sleep over a period of time, then I'm a real heavy sleeper. I can't imagine how it feels to take the LSAT, but I can only recall the times we've had to take the ACT's and that was pretty much hell for me. I'm not a great test taker though. So lucky you got to study abroad in Germany, Austria and Switzerland! I really want to travel Europe, but especially Germany. I hear it's beautiful, luckily my fiancé is part German so I won't be totally lost. I can also relate, growing up and going separate ways from your friends. It's a little strange, but it's nice, because when you get a chance to get together and catch up, it's nostalgic and sweet! Good luck in your future endeavors!

  11. Hi Elizabeth!
First of all, your theme is so pretty! It was so cool to read about your crazy summer, and I feel like even that little bit served as a great intro to all of you! I recently studied abroad too, and it was one of the most wonderful things I've ever done. Though I didn't have time to visit Austria and Switzerland, I did visit Germany one weekend and loved it. So nice to meet you, and good luck with lawyering!

  12. Elizabeth,

What a great introduction and snap shot of your life. I am very jealous that you got to study abroad as that is one thing I want to do most being in college. I think Germany would be incredible to get to travel to. I applaud you for taking the LSAT as it sounds like one of the hardest test in the world. Good luck going forward and hope you have a great semester.

  13. Hey, Elizabeth! I also got to study abroad this past summer, and I absolutely loved every minute of it! I would study abroad every summer if finances were not a barrier. I got to travel to France and the Netherlands when I went, and really wanted to visit Germany, too, but didn't get to go. I also took the MCAT recently, so I completely understand the pain of the behemoth standardized tests. Good luck with your future, and I hope you have a wonderful semester!

  14. Hey Elizabeth!
Wow, so many people in our class have had the opportunity to study abroad and it's so cool that you did! That's also a lot of traveling in such a short amount of time, and I bet every bit of it was worth it.
I feel your pain with the LSAT(except PCAT for me) and I hope you did very well on it! I actually laughed at the relation of the test makers to satan. And man, you just couldn't catch a break even after long preparation and taking the test from your reaction to hydrocodone! It definitely sounds like you had a crazy, but overall wonderful summer!
Good luck to you the rest of this semester and in your future!

  15. Hey Elizabeth! Wow, what a summer! Your wisdom teeth removal experience sounds terrifying, but your study abroad experience sounds like so much fun! The LSAT and every other admissions test are all pure evil, but I’m glad you did well! Your title is super cute, and so relatable. Being a real life adult is weird but fun at the same time! Good luck, and looking forward to your blog!

  16. Hey Elizabeth!

I can’t believe it took me this long to find your blog and meet you! But I can totally relate to you. I had to be a real adult over the summer as well. I had a real job where I worked 8-5 and wow it was definitely something that was hard to get used to! But it sounds like you were successful and being real adult later on should be no problem for you!

  17. Hey, Elizabeth! I know it the end of the semester but I don't think its ever too late to meet new people, so nice to meet you! Even though you were adulting I think your study abroad trip sounds awesome. I too spent my summer adulting, toiling away in the Hardware section at Lowe's. I feel like visiting Germany, Switzerland, and Austria was way cooler than a Moore, OK hardware store. Enjoy your winter break!
